Weed Control in Wintertime

Feb 16, 2015 | Weed Control

Odd as it may seem, weed control for your lawn care in the wintertime may be necessary. All Turf Lawn Care‘s experienced lawn service technicians are trained to find these weed problems on the spot, even if they are just beginning to crop up. However, if you are unsure if you need weed control this winter, below is some helpful information about these invasive winter weeds.

First, let’s define what an annual weed is. There are two types of annual weeds, a winter annual or a summer annual. Since we are in the winter season, let us focus on the winter annual. This type of lawn weed generally lives and dies within a 12 month period, making it an “annual” plant. Winter annual weeds germinate in late summer or fall and are able to survive through the cold temperatures of winter, while other plants like your grass, lay dormant. By springtime, these weeds can grow quickly and rapidly produce large amounts of seed before they die off.

Georgia Winter Weeds Include, but are not limited to:

  • Speedwell (Veronica arvensis)
  • Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule)
  • Annual Bluegrass (Poa Annua)
  • Common Chickweed (Stellaria media)

Since these annual weeds are such hardy plants, they can easily take over most lawn turf during the wintertime, but particularly those lawns that are already in poor condition or simply have thin turf. One good defense against winter annual weeds ( and all lawn weeds in general), is to have thick lawn turf. Most weeds have problems growing in thick turf because they do not like the competition of other plant systems too close to them.

While herbicides and one-shot targeted weed-sprays can be effective for small amounts of these winter weeds, All Turf Lawn Care has the expertise to make you a lawn treatment plan that will specifically focus on weed control if it is a problem in your yard.
